Travel insurance for Indonesia gives you greater peace of mind when travelling to this far-flung destination. It can prevent you from having to pay out of pocket for hospitalisation, evacuation or an early return, while also protecting you against unexpected events.
Good to know: although insurance is not required to enter the country for a tourist stay, the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs nevertheless recommends taking out insurance to cover any eventuality.
The right choice will depend primarily on the length of your trip:
- For up to 45 days, temporary travel insurance is sufficient.
- If Indonesia is just one of several destinations you plan to visit this year, annual travel insurance makes more sense.
- For stays of more than three months, the Long Trip plan takes over.
Some specific risks, such as scooter accidents, volcanoes and dengue fever, also regularly feature in travellers’ accounts of trips to the archipelago, whether in Bali, Java or elsewhere, and are worth taking a closer look at.
Why take out travel insurance for Indonesia?
Travelling without cover exposes you to several very real risks, including:
- Expensive healthcare that is not always of the same standard. Outside major cities, medical facilities remain limited. While international clinics may be more reassuring, their services come at a price.
- Disrupted flights and travel plans. A volcanic eruption or weather alert can ground an aircraft overnight, potentially resulting in unexpected hotel stays.
- Lost luggage or documents. A bag lost during a connection or a passport stolen in a tourist area can quickly turn a dream trip into a nightmare.
- An unexpected event that prevents you from leaving or continuing your trip. A last-minute illness or natural disaster at your destination can completely derail a trip you have already paid for.
Medical risk nevertheless remains the most significant, and potentially the most costly. Beyond the risk of falling ill, choosing a healthcare facility, understanding a quote and arranging medical transport thousands of kilometres from home can quickly become an ordeal.
Travel insurance takes this burden off your shoulders, giving you optimal peace of mind in all circumstances.

What is the best travel insurance for Bali and Indonesia?
The best travel insurance for Bali, and Indonesia more generally, depends entirely on your traveller profile. You should therefore assess the medical cover limit and the services that match your needs to ensure a worry-free stay.
Criteria to consider include:
- A sufficient medical cover limit. Hospitalisation or evacuation from Indonesia can be expensive, so the reimbursement limit should be appropriate for this possibility.
- Medical repatriation. If something goes wrong, we arrange your return to Belgium when your condition or the circumstances justify it.
- Assistance available around the clock, and in your language! With a six- to seven-hour time difference in Bali, emergencies rarely happen during Belgian “office hours”. That is why 24/7 assistance is so useful.
- Your planned activities. Sports and outings such as surfing, diving or hiking on a volcano are not covered in the same way by every plan. For example, search and rescue costs and skiing accidents do not have identical limits across all offers.
- Protecting your finances. Because many expenses such as flights, accommodation and activities are paid in advance, cancellation insurance can reimburse you if you have to cancel for reasons specified in the policy.
- (mention that Indonesia is not covered by Belgian mutual health insurance)
To quickly see the differences, here are our main travel insurance plans side by side:
| Plan | Maximum duration per trip | Medical expenses reimbursed | What sets it apart | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary | 45 days | €250,000 | Repatriation and early return included, at a low price | A one-off trip to Indonesia (Bali, Java, Jakarta, etc.) |
| Long Trip | 364 days | €1,250,000 | Search and rescue up to €5,000 | Erasmus, tour of Asia, digital nomad |
| Annual Light | 14 days | €250,000 | All your trips during the year under one policy | Several short trips per year |
| Annual Smart | 3 months | €1,250,000 | Ski assistance, reimbursement for unused days | Frequent travellers, longer stays |
| Annual Sport | 3 months | Unlimited | Search and rescue up to €15,000, luggage and sports equipment | Surfing, diving, high-altitude hiking. Please note that certain dangerous sports are excluded. See our General Terms and Conditions. |
| Annual VIP | 3 months | Unlimited | Cancellation insurance, NoGo, unlimited healthcare expense cover, etc. | The most comprehensive cover for all types of trips |
One feature common to all six plans is worth noting: they require you to be domiciled in Belgium.
Our different plans for the world’s largest archipelago
Temporary travel insurance for your holiday in Indonesia
For a one-off trip, the Tempo plan notably offers:
- reimbursement of medical expenses up to €250,000;
- repatriation in the event of an injury or illness requiring it;
- early return if a close relative is hospitalised.
It covers stays of up to 45 days, which suits most holidays in Bali or Java-Bali tours.
Annual travel insurance for Indonesia, for frequent travellers
Are you planning to discover Bali in summer, enjoy a city break in spring and take a long weekend in autumn? In that case, an annual plan means you do not have to take out a new policy for every trip, giving you optimal peace of mind.
We offer four: Light, Smart, Sport and VIP, but each has a maximum duration for any single trip.
While the Light version limits each trip to 14 consecutive days, coverage extends to three months for the other three plans. Your choice will depend on whether you also want cancellation and luggage insurance or higher search and rescue limits.
What the Long Trip plan covers, and its limitations
If you are looking for Indonesia insurance for remote working abroad, a university course, a professional contract in Bali or extended travel, the Long Trip plan is recommended for stays of more than three months.
It:
- protects you for up to 364 consecutive days;
- reimburses medical expenses up to €1,250,000;
- covers search and rescue costs up to €5,000;
- provides for early return and medical repatriation.
Travel insurance for Indonesia: how much should you budget?
The price of travel insurance for Indonesia depends on four factors:
- the length of your stay;
- your age;
- the plan you choose;
- any options added, such as cancellation cover or cover for high-risk sports.
For example, a traveller going away for one week in December 2026 would pay €72 for temporary insurance, while someone under the age of 54 travelling for the entire first half of 2027 would pay €737 for Long Trip insurance. The same person would pay €123 for Annual Light insurance.
To find out exactly how much you should budget for your profile, we invite you to get your personalised quote in just a few clicks, with no obligation, directly on our product pages. Bear in mind, however, that the cheapest price does not always provide the best protection, particularly in a country where medical evacuation can quickly cost tens of thousands of euros.
Consider the risks before taking out insurance!
Indonesia has its own specific characteristics, and good travel insurance for Bali needs to take them into account. The rest of the archipelago shares some of these risks, including scooter use, surfing hazards and volcanoes.
Scooters in Bali, a classic choice
Although renting a scooter is extremely quick and easy locally, being legally authorised to ride one requires a little more preparation. A foreign driver must carry an international driving permit in addition to their Belgian driving licence. Helmets are compulsory for both the rider and passenger. Please note that driving can be difficult on roads that are sometimes in poor condition.
Important: without a valid licence, you may not only face a fine, but your insurer may also challenge your claim in the event of an accident.
Volcanoes and earthquakes: beware of disrupted flights!
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Earthquakes and eruptions are therefore frequent, and the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs points out that these natural hazards can disrupt air traffic throughout the country.
To monitor volcanic activity in real time, visit the Indonesian government’s MAGMA Indonesia website.
Remember to register with Travellers Online before you leave.
The main health risks in Bali
Three health issues are frequently mentioned in official Belgian recommendations:
- Rabies. It is still present in certain areas of the archipelago, and tourists have recently been affected following animal bites. Any bite or scratch, even if it appears minor, therefore warrants prompt medical consultation.
- Adulterated alcohol. Methanol poisoning, sometimes fatal, has been reported in Bali and Lombok. It is therefore safer to stick to sealed bottled drinks or recognised brands.
- Dengue fever. Even careful travellers can be affected, as shown by the account of a customer who contracted it in Southeast Asia. Our article on tropical diseases while travelling details useful preventive measures before travelling to Indonesia.
Before your flight, the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp provides details about vaccines and health risks on its Wanda website, which is important to consult.
Protect yourself when taking part in sports
Surfing over a reef, scuba diving, climbing a volcano at dawn... Bali’s classic activities are plentiful and certainly something to dream about! That said, when taking part in these kinds of activities, it is better to be covered.
With the exception of extremely dangerous sports, unless they are practised under professional supervision, Redion does everything possible to protect you and intervene if something goes wrong. As evidence of this, all our plans, with the exception of Annual Light, include a budget for search and rescue expenses.
Important: before booking an activity abroad, make sure the organisation offering it is officially recognised and complies with all safety regulations.
In any case, to avoid unpleasant surprises, remember to carefully check the conditions set out in our IPID documents.
Travelling to Indonesia from Belgium: remember your passport, visa and arrival card!
Entry requirements change regularly, and the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs page remains the reference to consult before every departure.
Here are the main documents and formalities to remember for a tourist stay:
- Passport. It must be valid for six months from the date of arrival in Indonesia and have at least two blank pages.
- Digital arrival card. It can be completed free of charge on the All Indonesia website or app (https://allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id/) within the three days before arrival, and the resulting QR code is scanned at the airport.
- Visa. The electronic tourist visa is valid for 30 days by default and is subject to a fee. The official website also offers longer visas for stays of 60 days or more.
- Bali tourist tax. It amounts to IDR 150,000 per person and can be paid online or upon arrival, regardless of where you are travelling from.
- Trip registration. It is important to register your stay on Travellers Online. This allows the Belgian authorities to know your destination and contact you in the event of a crisis.
A stay in Indonesia of more than 30 days for an internship, studies or remote working requires an additional check: the type of visa must correspond to the purpose of your stay, and your insurance must match its duration.

FAQ: answers to all your questions
Do I need travel insurance for Indonesia?
It is strongly recommended, as local medical facilities remain limited outside major cities and international clinics can be expensive. Travel insurance is designed to cover medical expenses, arrange repatriation when necessary and provide assistance around the clock.
Is travel insurance compulsory for Bali?
No insurance is required for a standard tourist stay in Bali, just as it is not required elsewhere in the archipelago. It nevertheless remains strongly recommended, because your Belgian mutual health insurance does not cover Indonesia.
What is the best travel insurance for Bali?
The best travel insurance for Bali is the one that matches the length and activities of your trip. In this respect, Redion offers temporary, annual and Long Trip insurance.
Before choosing, always check the medical expense limit, whether repatriation is included, 24/7 assistance, cancellation and luggage options, and which activities are covered.
What does your health insurance cover for a trip to Bali?
It reimburses medical expenses incurred locally according to the limit of the selected plan, arranges repatriation in the event of illness or injury, and provides for early return if a close relative is hospitalised in Belgium. Please note: medical conditions known before departure are excluded from the Tempo and Long Trip plans.
Which insurance should I choose for a stay of more than three months in Indonesia?
The Long Trip plan is designed for stays of more than three months, up to 364 consecutive days, with medical expenses reimbursed up to €1,250,000. It is intended for travellers domiciled in Belgium: if you transfer your place of residence to Indonesia, international insurance for residents will be required.
Is expat insurance available for Indonesia?
Not in the strict sense, at Redion!
Our plans are travel insurance policies designed for people who remain domiciled in Belgium. Long Trip covers extended stays of up to 364 days, typical of an internship, a semester of study or a digital nomad assignment.
Can I ride a scooter in Bali with my travel insurance?
It depends on your policy and your driving licence. Indonesian authorities expect foreign drivers to carry an international driving permit in addition to their Belgian driving licence, and an accident without the correct licence can complicate insurance coverage. Read the general terms and conditions of your plan to understand your coverage, and always take the necessary precautions!
Important: driving can be difficult on roads that are not always in good condition. If you have never ridden a two-wheeler before, you are strongly advised to choose another means of transport, such as local buses, a bicycle, car or taxi, to avoid an unfortunate accident.
Do I need a visa to travel to Indonesia from Belgium?
Yes, and it can easily be obtained for a tourist stay through https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/. The electronic visa is valid for 30 days by default and is subject to a fee. Your passport must remain valid for six months from the date of arrival and have two blank pages, and you must complete the “All Indonesia” digital arrival card. For longer stays, 60-day and longer-duration visas are available.
